NOVA SCOTIA COMMUNITY COLLEGE
New Information Technology Innovation Centre Will Prepare Grads for In-Demand Jobs

June 25, 2021

Premier Iain Rankin attended the unveiling of the Nova Scotia Community College's (NSCC's) new Information Technology Innovation Centre, an innovative facility that will train young people for jobs in the growing digital economy and help position Nova Scotia as a start-up capital in Canada.

The 19,000-square-foot centre will accommodate 100 additional students at the Leeds Street campus in Halifax. It opens in September.

"NSCC has been making smart investments that train more Nova Scotians for in-demand jobs," said Premier Iain Rankin. "Investing in NSCC and other post-secondary institutions in the province and helping to develop our talent here is part of our government's vision for the future of this province."

Earlier this year, the Rankin government invested $16.8 million in four Nova Scotia universities to expand their computer science programs.

The funding to Dalhousie University, Acadia University, Saint Mary's University and St. Francis Xavier University supports the government's commitment to develop digital skills in Nova Scotia's workforce.

In keeping with NSCC's focus on sustainability, the building has been designed for energy efficiency and will allow for learning and research. The project is registered with the Canadian Green Building Council for LEED certification.

With sustained year-over-year enrolment growth, NSCC's Halifax IT campus has reached its capacity of almost 1,000 students and there was an urgent need for new space. Construction on the new centre began in April 2020.

Nova Scotia's rapidly growing need for digital skill sets means there is a substantive industry need for training, applied research, and commercialization to meet the sector's current and future demand.

"Nova Scotia Community College has a solid track record of training Nova Scotians to contribute to our province as work-ready graduates, innovators, entrepreneurs and community leaders," said Lena Metlege Diab, Minister of Labour and Advanced Education. "They share our passion for creating new opportunities in the digital sector with an emphasis on equity and inclusion to ensure more Nova Scotians have access to the training they need."
