West Island Community Shares teams up with John Abbott College to offer new certificate in non-profit leadership

December 9, 2021

West Island Community Shares teams up with John Abbott College to offer a new certificate that will support the professional development of current and aspiring leaders of non-profit organisations. The community sector is also feeling the effect of the current labour shortage and wants to attract people from other sectors who are looking for a new challenging career.

Participants in this 28-hour program will receive the knowledge, skills and tools required to manage and operate a successful non-profit organisation. Divided into three modules, instructors will cover a wide range of topics from good governance practices, leadership, strategic planning, HR, financial management, fundraising, donor management, and more.

The certificate is aimed at aspiring leaders including current middle management and front-line staff, newly appointed directors, university/college graduates interested in a career in non-profit organisations, as well as anyone who is looking for a career change.

QUOTES

"At the same time as the community sector is feeling the impact of the labour shortage, we hear from friends, neighbours and family members who are questioning their career choices and don't necessarily want to go back to a pre-pandemic lifestyle. These people present with an impressive background that could be extremely beneficial to our community organisations. This new Certificate in Non-Profit Leadership will offer them a bridge to help smooth their career transition."

- Sophie McCann, Executive Director, West Island Community Shares

'The John Abbott College Centre for Continuing Education has a long history of providing programs to up-skill mature students in collaboration with the community and this is another excellent example. This Certificate program will offer an opportunity for individuals to finetune their management and leadership skills to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of community organisations''
