Character education is the teaching of values and morality. Some schools have adopted the 7 Grandfather Teachings, or Seven Sacred Teachings, as a model for imparting these virtues. Each teaching is shared in the form of a story and is represented by an animal.
The value of love is also shared throughout the other six teachings: wisdom (beaver), bravery/ courage (bear), honesty (Sabe/ raven), respect (buffalo), truth (turtle), and humility (wolf). Therefore it is represented by Grandfather Eagle, who is strong enough to carry all of the teachings. The eagle flies the highest to receive love from the Great Spirit and then drops it on the people.
Unconditional love can be expressed through the action of kindness. Love the land, for the land provides everything one needs to survive. Love yourself, for it is only when you love yourself that you can truly love someone else. Love all life on Earth.
Schools focus on one value each month and recognize students who exemplify these teachings. Love is often taught during the month of February.
