The demand for professionals in the Health and Wellness sector in Ontario and across Canada is increasing as the age of our population increases, says HWCDSB Early College Special Assignment Daniella Kupis.
That's why experiential reach ahead learning experiences are so important, she adds.
On Wednesday, February 15, 2023, Health Care students at Bishop Ryan Catholic Secondary School, along with their teacher Tony Locco, had an opportunity to participate in one such an opportunity at Niagara College's Welland Campus.
The students were met by a representative from the recruitment office and a personal guide who took the group on a tour of the main building and introduced students to the many post-secondary program opportunities available in the SHSM Health and Wellness pathway at Niagara College. Next, the group participated in a hands-on learning experience with the Massage therapy program.
"The students were given an opportunity to develop clinical assessment skills and practice massage therapy techniques in a safe supervised learning environment," says Kurpis.
In the Nursing Lab, students viewed simulation props and materials used in post-secondary training. The day ended with a certificate acknowledging their participation in the reach ahead program.
Specialist High Skill Major (SHSM) is a Ministry of Education approved specialized program that allows senior students to focus their learning on a specific economic sector while meeting the requirements to graduate high school. Students enrolled in a SHSM experience a range of customized, career focused learning opportunities while working towards their Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD).
SHSM Health and Wellness pathway program is available at all seven of our HWCDSB secondary schools.
