Workforce Census Results

In the fall of 2022, the Avon Maitland District School Board (AMDSB) conducted a Workforce Census (the Census) and invited all employees to participate. The Census was a voluntary, confidential self-identification survey that aligned with their commitment to the principles of equity, diversity and inclusiveness across all areas of the organization, as outlined in the AMDSB Equity Action Plan. The Census was informed by provincial legislation including the Ontario Human Rights Code, Ontario's Anti-Racism data standards, and the Ontario Ministry of Education's Equity Action Plan. 

The Census was open to all AMDSB staff between October 24 and December 31, 2022. An overall response rate of 75% was achieved, one of the highest rates of participation of any district school board in Ontario.  

This level of employee engagement provides a more accurate demographic data capture and provides the baseline data needed to compare the AMDSB workforce demographics with student demographics and the demographics of the Huron Perth communities. Moving forward, AMDSB will use the Census data to develop plans and strategies to recruit and retain a diverse workforce. The data will support an evidence-informed approach in human resources planning as we examine our employment practices for the extent to which they create barriers for staff and seek to eliminate employment-related inequities across our board. 

Dr. Lisa Walsh, Director of Education stated: "We are very pleased with the response rate of our Workforce Census. It provides a clear picture of employee demographics and the results will serve as the foundation for a thorough Employment Systems Review. This work directly contributes to our commitment to meet the needs of our students and to have them reflected in the staff that we recruit and hire."
