BURNABY SCHOOLS
Superintendent Announces Upcoming Retirement

September 8, 2023

Superintendent Gina Niccoli-Moen has provided notice to the Burnaby Board of Education of her intent to retire. While her last day in the office will be January 31, 2024, she will provide transition support when a successor is named.

Burnaby Board of Education Chair Bill Brassington:

In my role as a parent and as a Trustee, I have personally had the privilege of working alongside Superintendent Gina Niccoli-Moen. Gina has always led with her heart first, and she has left an indelible mark on the staff and students of the Burnaby School District. On behalf of the Board, I would like to offer our sincere thanks for her years of service and congratulations on her retirement."

Over the course of her 33-year career with the Burnaby School District, Niccoli-Moen has left an enduring mark on the lives of so many. She began her career in education as an English teacher in 1990 at Burnaby South Secondary. Niccoli-Moen's leadership skills were quickly recognized and by 1996 she was a Department Head at Burnaby North. In 1999 she became a Vice Principal, first at Cariboo Hill Secondary and then at Burnaby South. She stepped in as Principal there in 2004. Two years later she joined the leadership team at the District Administration Office as a Director of Instruction. Within 5 years Niccoli-Moen progressed to Assistant Superintendent and then earned the role of Deputy Superintendent. She has served as Superintendent since February 2015.

Most recently, Niccoli-Moen has guided the District through significant growth in the number of students across Burnaby, the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, and has supported Trustees in the development and implementation of their strategic plan.

A graduate of Burnaby North Secondary, her first exposure to public schools in Burnaby began as a Grade 1 student, herself, at Westridge Elementary.

The Board will be engaging the services of an executive search firm to conduct a national search and recruitment process for this critical role.
