EDMONTON
Vision Zero School Kit updated for 2023/2024 school year

October 25, 2023

The City's 2023/2024 Vision Zero School Kit is now available to help Edmonton schools build street safety awareness among students and families. It's part of the City's commitment to Vision Zero, the goal of eliminating traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries on our streets by 2032.

Street safety around schools is essential in protecting our most vulnerable road users and in supporting healthy and vibrant communities. The recently updated Vision Zero School Kit is a resource that schools can use to create new experiences and conversations that can contribute to more liveable neighbourhoods.

"The School Kit is an example of how the City continues to update and improve resources and tools to help teachers, students and parents learn about safety around schools," said Christie Pelletier, Director of Safe Mobility at the City of Edmonton. "Through new exciting activities and resources, this valuable initiative continues to help create safer, more livable streets."

"A number of Edmonton Public Schools receive support from the City of Edmonton's Vision Zero School Kits initiative," said Shaminder Parmar, Planner, Edmonton Public Schools. "The collaboration with schools to promote traffic safety awareness for streets located around school sites is greatly appreciated. The program has introduced innovative traffic safety measures like vibrant crosswalks and "Do-It-Yourself" signage, which foster collaboration with students and their school communities. These initiatives are part of a larger offering of resources that empower students and schools to take an active role in enhancing the safety of their communities."

This year's School Kit includes:

  • A Do-It-Yourself K-6 lesson plan and activities
  • A variety of signs to encourage safe driving behaviours
  • Updated activities for classes to create their own sign, banner, and crosswalk designs
  • Automated enforcement at approved sites
  • Resources to learn more about street safety in Edmonton

The Vision Zero School Kits are intended for school use only. School staff can request a Vision Zero School Kit - and other activities and resources to help make the streets around schools safer - by visiting edmonton.ca/VisionZeroSchoolKit.

Parents, guardians and other community members who would like a school kit for their community are encouraged to get in touch with their local school.
