OTTAWA CATHOLIC SCHOOL BOARD
Spreading Smiles: Holy Redeemer Students' Gaming Cart Initiative

February 23, 2024

Step into Holy Redeemer Catholic School, and you'll find more than just classrooms bustling with eager minds; you'll discover a heartwarming initiative that epitomizes our students' compassionate spirit and creative spark. It is spearheaded by the dynamic Mme. Babineau. She works with a group of Grade 4 and 5 students immersed in the Social Entrepreneurs Program (SEP) on a mission to spread joy to the young patients at Ronald McDonald House (RMH) in Ottawa. The "RMH Gaming Cart" is more than just a project; it symbolizes the hope that brightens the days of young patients residing at Ronald McDonald House in Ottawa.

Embarking on a Mission of Kindness

The students began by educating themselves about the RHM and its invaluable work supporting families with sick children. Armed with knowledge and determination, they set out to create portable gaming carts to provide entertainment and distraction for young patients.

Building Brighter Days, One Cart at a Time

Building the carts from scratch using IKEA instructions, the students added LED lights to make them visually appealing. They equipped each cart with a Nintendo Switch and a selection of popular games, some of which were even coded by the students. But the generosity didn't stop there students also designed and donated socks, loom bracelets, stickers, and slime to bring additional joy to the children at RMH.

Funding the Dream

The students rolled up their sleeves to fund their project and got to work. They organized a school-wide hot chocolate sale, meticulously planning every detail with the guidance of their mentor, Mrs. Diphali. Their efforts paid off handsomely, raising over $1500 and earning enthusiastic support from their school community and the broader Ottawa area.

Delivering Joy: The First RMH Gaming Cart

With a loan from the school board and additional donations from McDonald's, the students could deliver the first gaming cart to the RHM on February 1st. The response from staff, parents, and, most importantly, the sick children themselves has been overwhelmingly positive.

Future Plans and Lessons Learned

Looking ahead, the students are determined to continue their fundraising efforts. With the goal of creating three gaming carts in total, they're planning a school-wide Minecraft/Scratch coding contest and leveraging their online store to raise the necessary funds.

This initiative exemplifies the essence of SEP, showcasing the students' creativity and entrepreneurial spirit while also imparting valuable life skills such as critical thinking and financial literacy. It serves as a shining example of the power of young minds coming together to make a difference in the lives of others.

As a community, we couldn't be prouder of our students at Holy Redeemer Catholic School. Their dedication, empathy, and generosity serve as an inspiration to us all. Together, we can truly make a difference in the world, one cart and one act of kindness at a time.
