On March 1, 2024, the Alberta Government announced plans for priority school projects across the province.
As part of Budget 2024, Edmonton Catholic Schools received full construction funding on the following projects:
- New K-9 School in Crystallina Nera East
- New K-9 School in Heritage Valley/Cavanagh
- New K-9 School in Hays Ridge
- K-9 Rundle Heights Replacement School
The Division received design funding for two projects. Design funding means we can do all the necessary work required to prepare for construction. The two projects are:
- New K-9 School in Laurel
- New K-9 School in Rivers Edge
The six projects were priorities 1-6 on our Three-Year Capital Plan 2024-2027, which was approved in March 2023.
Statement from Board Chair Sandra Palazzo
"We are so pleased for the families in Crystallina Nera East, Cavanagh, and Hays Ridge, as there is relief in sight. We can now see an end to the overcrowding in the schools surrounding those areas and the resulting need to temporarily redirect students away from their community schools. The decision to fully fund construction is tremendously responsive to the school infrastructure crisis that exists in those areas. We strongly feel that families should be able to receive an excellent Catholic education for their children in the neighbourhood that they call home.
We are also excited for the families of Rundle Heights as they will be learning in a new state-of-the-art school in the near future. Vibrant school facilities are an important part of the revitalization of established neighbourhoods. This project will bring together students from three aging school facilities and create an engaging new Catholic learning environment that will serve this community for decades.
We also received design funding for two Catholic K-9 schools in The Meadows/West Laurel in Southeast Edmonton and Riverview/Rivers Edge in West Edmonton. Design funding means we can do all the necessary work required to prepare for construction. We will continue to advocate for full construction funding for these two schools so that families can receive an excellent Catholic education for their children in their home community.
This is a significant step forward in helping us serve the growing number of families who are choosing Edmonton Catholic Schools. We are pleased to see the province's commitment to building new schools coming to fruition so quickly."
