April 3, 2024

Thompson Rivers University (TRU) is hosting a free workshop for female and non-binary high-school students in grades 8-12 who are interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The workshop involves working on robots and exploring the TRU Makerspace.

Students get an overview of engineering, including the TRU program, and career talks by several female engineers and TRU engineering students. The workshop takes place on the Kamloops campus in Old Main (OM 1791) on Saturday, April 20, from 10 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

"Engineering is such an amazing and diverse field that many people don't know much about," says Dr. Catherine Tatarniuk, an assistant teaching professor in the engineering department at TRU. "I love having this opportunity to share my experiences and passion with high-school girls to help them better understand what an exciting career it can be."

Students will:

  • Gain hands-on experience working with robots
  • Learn about different engineering disciplines
  • Talk with current software engineering students
  • Explore VR
  • Make stickers and buttons
  • Test a 3D printer
