CALGARY
City invites students to create a traffic safety video for a chance to win prize pack

April 4, 2024

Calling all filmmakers! Put on your director's hat, grab your camera and help make our city's streets safer for everyone.

As part of our ongoing efforts to further public traffic safety education and engagement, we are launching a Travel Safe Student Video Contest, in partnership with Calgary Police Service and the Calgary Public Library.

We invite all Calgary students in Grades 6 to 12 to create an original 30-second video to promote safety while traveling on city streets, sidewalks and/or pathways for a chance to win a prize pack worth more than $1,200.

Finalists will be showcased at a public viewing party and winning videos will be used in future safety education initiatives and published online.

You can produce your original work solo, or team up with classmates, friends or family.

"We are so excited to launch this contest," said Jacquelyn Oriold, Education Specialist with the Mobility department at the City of Calgary. "Not only are we trying help increase youth's understanding of traffic safety rules, but we also hope to encourage conversations among students about how to stay safe when traveling on city streets. On top of this, we can't wait to witness the talented work by students in this city and to showcase their skills."

The Travel Safe Student Video contest is not only a fun and engaging way for students to participate in transportation safety, it's part of the Calgary safer mobility plan, a five-year strategy aimed at improving the safety of our transportation network. A key target identified in the plan is to achieve a 25 per cent reduction in the number of major injury and fatality collisions.

"We are always striving to improve the transportation network for the safety of all users," said Oriold. "A critical piece of this plan is education and engagement and Calgary youth and their voices are an important part of that. We are looking forward to understanding their traffic safety concerns and input."

Finalist videos will be celebrated publicly at a movie screening on Monday June 3, 2024 at the Central Library Patricia A. Whelan Performance Hall.

The grand prize winner will receive an epic "Explore Calgary prize pack" valued at $1,200. There are two runner-up prize packs valued at $250 each.

Winners of the contest will be announced by Mayor Jyoti Gondek at the public screening event (schedule permitting).
