Canada-Wide Science Fair 2023 Named Finalist in Edmonton Tourism Awards for Business Event of the Year

April 18, 2024

Youth Science Canada proudly announces that the 2023 Canada-Wide Science Fair, held in Edmonton, has been recognized as a finalist for the Business Event of the Year in the prestigious Edmonton Tourism Awards. This nomination underscores the event's exceptional impact on the local community, its contribution to promoting science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) among youth, and its substantial economic and cultural benefits to the city.

The Canada-Wide Science Fair, Canada's largest youth STEM event, brought together the brightest young minds from every province and territory to showcase their innovative projects and cutting-edge research. The week-long event, hosted at the Edmonton Convention Centre, featured almost 400 students competing for approximately $2 million in awards, scholarships, and prizes and the opportunity to engage with leading STEM professionals.

"This nomination is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and passion of everyone involved - from the brilliant students to our sponsors, volunteers, and the Edmonton community," said Reni Barlow, Youth Science Canada's executive director. "It highlights the importance of fostering a passion for STEM among our youth and the role of such events in inspiring the next generation of researchers and innovators."

Visitors and students from local Edmonton elementary and secondary schools observe a Boston Dynamics robot during the STEM Expo at the Canada-Wide Science Fair on May 19, 2023. The fair welcomed 10,000 visitors over the three-day Expo at the Edmonton Convention Centre in Edmonton, Alberta.

The Edmonton Tourism Awards celebrate excellence in the local tourism industry, recognizing organizations, events, and individuals that have made significant contributions to the tourism sector and have played a key role in promoting Edmonton as a vibrant, welcoming, and dynamic city. Being named a finalist for the Business Event of the Year acknowledges the Canada-Wide Science Fair's substantial contribution to this goal, drawing ten thousand visiting educators and their students from across Alberta to Edmonton and showcasing the city's capacity to host major national events.

"We are incredibly grateful for this recognition and are excited about the opportunity to spotlight the achievements of young scientists from across Canada," added Julia McDevitt, CWSF fair director. "This nomination also reinforces the strong partnership between Youth Science Canada, the City of Edmonton, and the local community, working collaboratively to support and celebrate youth innovation."

Youth Science Canada and the Canada-Wide Science Fair team extend their heartfelt thanks to the City of Edmonton, the Edmonton Convention Centre, the University of Alberta and all the sponsors, volunteers, and participants who contributed to the event's success. We look forward to continuing to inspire and engage Canada's youth in STEM for years to come.

The Canada-Wide Science Fair will be returning to Edmonton in 2026. For more information about the Canada-Wide Science Fair, please visit youthscience.ca/science-fairs/cwsf
