Tricia Martin's role at SD83 is focused on helping teachers increase their knowledge of how to build students' physical literacy skills.
A retired teacher and lifelong proponent of physically active and the outdoors, Tricia is particularly passionate about soccer and trail running. She currently works part-time as SD83's Elementary Physical Literacy team teacher, traveling to different elementary schools in the district to support teachers in developing their ability to teach students physical literacy and fundamental movement skills.
Physical literacy is defined as having the abilities, confidence, and motivation to be active for life. Fundamental movement skills, such as running, jumping, throwing, kicking, and balancing, form the foundation for more advanced movement and sports. This project is supported by funding from the Ministry of Health through the School Physical Activity and Physical Literacy project.
Falkland students working with Martin on physical literacy skills
As part of the SD83 School Physical Activity & Physical Literacy Program, Martin has worked with staff and students at 10 elementary schools so far this school year. This program provides teachers with the opportunity to build their own physical literacy knowledge and capacity. Some of the options teachers could choose for their program visits with Martin included:
- Assessing fundamental movement skills (FMS) during PE class using games and stations that allow for easy and efficient assessment of students' FMS
- Dynamic warm up and agility ladders.
- Classroom sessions on active learning and movement breaks.
- Gym sessions focusing on either throwing or kicking.
- Playground fitness circuit.
- Using games to develop skills.
