OTTAWA CATHOLIC SCHOOL BOARD
Celebrating Ottawa Catholic School Board's Voices of Olympia Canada Winners

May 22, 2024

The Ottawa Catholic School Board (OCSB) is proud to celebrate our talented students who have shown exceptional dedication and creativity in addressing critical global issues. This year, St. Francis Xavier High School students and Holy Trinity High School have emerged as champions in the prestigious Voices of Olympia Canada (VOOC) competition.

OCSB Students Shine at Voices of Olympia Canada (VOOC)

Voices of Olympia Canada (VOOC) is a transformative global citizenship initiative specifically designed for high school girls in Canada. It provides a platform for young women to explore pressing issues through a human rights framework, focusing on gender inequalities. Each year, VOOC selects a theme that challenges participants to think critically and propose innovative solutions. This year's theme was poverty and its impact on the empowerment of girls and women.

Celebrating Our Champions from St. Francis Xavier High School

We are incredibly proud to announce that a team from St. Francis Xavier High School, consisting of Kaarhunyaa Sivapalan, Sofia Ambroziak, and Nagwa Abdelaziz, has won the 2024 Voices of Olympia Canada First Prize of $2,500. These students showcased exceptional insight and creativity in developing solutions to combat poverty, demonstrating the immense potential of youth in addressing global issues. Additionally, they received two Jury Mentions: one for Best Essay and another for a high-impact social project.

Applauding Holy Trinity High School's Technological Innovators

The talented Holy Trinity High School students are Jahnavi Thotla, Maryam Jama, Zohra Akbari, and Melanie Aguilar. They won the Abraham Securities Special Prize of $1,000 for their outstanding project, which integrated technology into the fight against poverty over multiple generations. Their innovative approach exemplified how technological advancements can be harnessed to create positive change and empower communities. Congratulations to all the participants and winners for their dedication, hard work, and inspiring contributions to global citizenship and social justice.
