True Sport Spotlight: Huntsville High School Physical Education Teacher
Erin Potts, a physical education teacher at HHS in Huntsville, Ontario, is using her grade 12 leadership class to connect the skills required to be an effective True Sport leader. For three weeks, students take turns running intramural events at their school, where the True Sport Principles are put into action. This hands-on approach allows them to practice interpersonal skills they were taught in the classroom, such as communication, trust, and integrity, as they navigate the challenges of organizing and overseeing the events.
Erin also emphasizes mentorship, dedicating a third of the course to it by encouraging students to reflect on their role models. Through these exercises, they learn about the power of their actions, and how they can be role models and mentors to the students who look up to them. The grade 12s had a great opportunity to turn these ideas into actions when they hosted an elementary school badminton tournament and high school orientation. Through intentional actions, they brought the True Sport Principles to life - fostering positive experiences and creating a safe space for the younger students to have fun and feel welcome.
Speaking of mentors, Erin is inspired by True Sport Champion alumnus and Huntsville resident, John Cowan, who has a long history of giving back to the community. Erin is working to ensure the next generation understands why it's essential to give back and create opportunities so that others can benefit from sport.
