Forging Bonds
In February, students from Notre Dame and Sacred Heart Catholic High Schools went on a cultural exchange journey to Fort Providence in the Northwest Territories. They experienced the vibrant traditions of the Dene community at Deh Gah School, participating in activities such as traditional crafts, drumming, and hand games sessions. The exchange culminated in a heartfelt gesture as the Deh Gah students shared bison meat, symbolizing the bonds formed during their time together.
Reconciliation Efforts
Three months later, the Deh Gah students visited Ottawa and were welcomed by Notre Dame and Sacred Heart students. This visit continued their reconciliation journey, promoting understanding and unity between the two groups. The trips expanded the students' perspectives on each other's communities.
Cultural Exchange
While in Fort Providence, the Ottawa students immersed themselves in the culture and traditions of the Dene people. When the Deh Gah students travelled to Ottawa, they learned about the region's history, customs, and traditions. The students also engaged in educational experiences tailored to their interests and needs, allowing the Deh Gah students to participate in various workshops and activities.
Community Engagement
The Deh Gah community warmly received the Ottawa students, just as the Ottawa community embraced the Deh Gah students. The students engaged with local residents, participated in community events, and forged new friendships.
Travel is Transformative
The exchange program acts as a platform for cultural exchange and aims to establish the groundwork for reconciliation. Organizers of these exchange programs understand the transformative power of travel. They believe that providing young people the opportunity to visit Canada, step out of their comfort zones, and experience something new is truly unique.
Saying Goodbye
As the exchange program came to an end, it was clear that strong bonds had been formed and lasting memories had been made. It was a time for reflection, gratitude, and joy as the students said goodbye, knowing that their shared experiences had helped build respect and understanding.
