UPPER GRAND DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD
Westminster Woods PS students raise money for Guelph Humane Society

June 25, 2024

In February, Gillian Whitcombe's grade 6 class at Westminster Woods Public School were inspired to raise money for a local charity following a classroom visit from Upper Grand District School Board's Equity Principal Sherwyn Solomon.

During the visit, Solomon challenged students to make the world a better place. After this challenge, students in Whitcombe's class set out to raise money for the Guelph Humane Society.

Students researched and proposed many types of fundraisers, from selling snacks to having teachers wear silly costumes. Eventually the class settled on selling packages of vinyl stickers. As part of this fundraiser, students sorted and packaged almost 5,000 stickers. After selling their stickers, students raised $1,500 for the Guelph Humane Society.

When reflecting on the experience, students said, "It was fun seeing how everyone wanted to support our fundraiser and the animals."

On Tuesday, June 18, 2024, students in the class brought their cheque to the Guelph Humane Society and participated in a tour that helped them learn how their donation would make a difference.

Great work, Westminster Woods PS!
