DURHAM DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD
DDSB Officially Approves New Name for Previously Unnamed North Oshawa P.S.: Maamawi iyaawag

July 4, 2024

We are very excited to announce the name of the previously Unnamed North Oshawa P.S. that will be opening its doors in September 2024: Maamawi iyaawag P.S.

After careful consideration and extensive consultation with the broader school community as well as the Indigenous community, the School Naming Committee proposed this name. It was officially approved by the Board of Trustees of the Durham District School Board (DDSB) at the Special Board Meeting held on June 24th, 2024.

The Naming Committee felt strongly that an Indigenous school name would demonstrate allyship, action and commitment to truth and reconciliation. It is in alignment with the DDSB Indigenous Education Policy and procedures and will provide staff, students and the community with an important opportunity to learn and grow together. Maamawi iyaawag in the Anishinaabemowin language means they are gathered together here'. This name symbolizes the bringing together of this community.

We are grateful to the School Naming Committee for their diligent efforts in selecting a name that reflects the values and aspirations of the community. The Naming Committee meticulously considered all voices and ensured that the chosen name aligned with the DDSB School Naming Policy, emphasizing equity and inclusivity while centering Indigenous Inherent Rights. This name was finalized only after careful consultation with the Indigenous community.

The establishment of Maamawi iyaawag Public School marks a significant milestone for the North Oshawa community and the Durham District School Board. This modern facility will offer high-quality student programming, designed to meet the long-term needs of our growing community and will offer the opportunity to focus on building a positive and supportive learning environment as we bring together students and families from the community.

We extend our appreciation to the Indigenous community, the School Naming Committee and the entire DDSB community for their valuable contributions and engagement throughout this process. Together, we are laying the foundation for a bright and promising future for our students.
