BURNABY SCHOOLS
Students Returning to News of Upgraded Larger Schools

August 30, 2024

Students and staff at Cameron Elementary are returning this fall to exciting news that they will be getting a new school building. This follows an announcement by the Ministry of Education and Child Care at the end of July that the Province will invest $67.6 million for the project.

In the same announcement, the Ministry made another commitment for Kitchener Elementary. In combination with their earlier support for a $22.5 million, 15-classroom prefabricated addition to the school, they are providing another $7.5 million for five more classrooms at Kitchener.

Burnaby Board of Education Chair Bill Brassington:

The number of students in our schools has been growing rapidly at an unprecedented rate, reflecting the ongoing expansion in the City of Burnaby. We are thrilled to work with the Ministry of Education and Child Care on these essential upgrades that benefit our whole community."

While in the very early planning stages, when Cameron Elementary is complete, the seismic replacement and addition will add 425 new student spaces.

Kitchener Elementary is in the design development stage and this additional investment, coupled with the previous one last December, brings the total number of new student seats at the school to 500.
