We're excited to introduce Otter, the newest addition to our SD72 team. Otter is being specially trained as a critical response and trauma service dog, here to support our students in unique ways.
Who is Otter?
Otter is a four-month-old golden retriever from Black Creek. From a very young age, Otter was carefully evaluated by SC1 Service Dogs, and he was chosen to take on this vital service dog role because of his sweet, nurturing nature and high social drive. Otter loves being around people especially children and is naturally inclined to give comfort and connection. His name, "Otter," was chosen for its symbolism to local Indigenous communities, representing empathy, friendship, peace, kindness, and family.
What Will Otter Do?
Otter's training is intense and tailored for our schools by SC1 Service Dogs. He's already completed his first level of training and is on track to earn his service dog certification by 18 months. Otter will primarily work at Cedar Elementary, assisting his handler Sherry Laffling in her counselling duties to help students with anxiety, emotional regulation, PTSD, and more. He'll also be available district-wide to assist in critical situations involving grief and loss.
When Will You See Him?
This fall, Otter will start visiting our schools to get familiar with the environments where he'll work. Remember, Otter is a service dog, not a pet. While he's friendly, it's important to respect his role please ask his handler, Sherry, before approaching him.
Why Otter Matters
Otter's role is groundbreaking. Unlike most service dogs, who support just one person, Otter will assist many students and staff, enhancing the emotional support services across our district.
We're eager to see the positive changes Otter will bring to our schools. Stay tuned for more updates as he continues his training!
