Two Surrey elementary schools are hoping to update their libraries by fundraising for new books, and they're getting some help from the Indigo Love of Reading Foundation's Adopt a School Fundraiser and Grant program.
H.T. Thrift Elementary and Mary Jane Shannon Elementary are among this year's schools participating in the annual campaign, which sees local Indigo, Coles, Chapters and Indigospirit stores raise money on behalf of a partner elementary school for literacy across Canada. The partner stores are:
- H.T. Thrift Elementary's fundraiser - Indigo Grandview Corners (Unit #10 - 2453 161A St.)
- Mary Jane Shannon Elementary's fundraiser - Coles Willowbrook Shopping Centre (19705 Fraser Hwy., Langley)
Every dollar donated in-store or online goes directly to the schools and helps to create equitable access to books, improve academic achievement by providing greater resources, and increases diversity and inclusion in literature to better reflect different student identities and broaden their perspectives.
"Most of our library collection is currently more than 17 years old and needs to be updated to better represent the cultural, socioeconomic and social/emotional differences of our students," reads H.T. Thrift's fundraiser write-up. "Students connect to stories with characters who they can relate to, and we will see more engagement in reading once students feel represented."
The campaign runs until Sunday, Oct. 6. To donate, visit Indigo Grandview Corners or Coles Willowbrook Shopping Centre, or donate online at the links below:
