LETHBRIDGE SCHOOL DIVISION
Chess for Life Club growing at Gilbert Paterson Middle School

October 10, 2024

On Monday (Oct 7), Gilbert Paterson Middle School students gathered in the Learning Commons for the first Chess for Life tournament of the 2024/2025 school year.

Hunter Trzaska, who is in her final teaching practicum at Paterson, started the Chess For Life Club to help students develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills through chess. The club also fosters inclusivity and community by bringing together students from different grade levels.

"Chess encourages strategic thinking, anticipation, and planning - skills valuable both in and outside the classroom," said Trzaska. "The club also promotes important executive function skills like impulse control, emotional regulation and flexible thinking."

She added that beyond cognitive growth, chess builds strong peer relationships and creates a positive and supportive school environment. As Trzaska looked to get the club off the ground, she sought support from a very important source.

"We could not have done it ourselves without the invaluable support and mentorship of Dr. Lance Grigg at the University of Lethbridge," she said.

As the interest in chess grows, she added the schools is always in need of additional chess boards and supplies to accommodate more students.

"If you're interested in supporting our chess program by donating boards or funds, please reach out to the school."

Please see the video below for more details about the club.
