Waverley Drive PS students get experience in new pollinator garden

November 14, 2024
Students at Waverley Drive Public School had the opportunity to learn about, and work in, the school's new pollinator garden on October 29.

Mrs. May's Intermediate LRC-16 class and Mrs. Lepard's and Mrs. Byer's Kindergarten class paired with members of the community, including parent council, parent volunteers, and members of the Guelph Horticultural Society for the experience.

Throughout the morning, students and volunteers worked together to add spring bulbs and milkweed pods to the garden.

Students at the school have been learning about the importance of gardening with native pollinators through the restoration of the garden, which began in the spring.

All Waverley students were introduced to the new pollinator garden during the school's Take Me Outside Day, which was organized by Ms. Thompson and the school's Eco Club, along with Jayme Sones from The University of Guelph's Centre for Biodiversity Genomics (and also a parent at the school).

The school plans to expand the garden in the future to include more signs identifying native species as well as student created pollinator houses.

Excellent work Waverley!
