Recently, South Delta Secondary set an inspiring example of how career exploration can be integrated into the educational journey of students in grades 8-10. The school, driven by a vision to prepare students for the future, hosted a WorkBC Find Your Fit two-day session that focused on connecting youth with diverse career pathways in a practical, student-centered way. The result? An overwhelming success that has already begun to transform the lives of students.
Here is the testimony from the person who organized the event.
"I heard about Find Your Fit from a fellow Career Facilitator and was excited to bring the interactive experience to our school. It was an incredibly valuable experience for our students as they interacted with all the potential job fields that were highlighted. Students were highly engaged in the activities and had their eyes opened to future careers to pursue. Our teachers and admin team were also impressed with the quality and tech forward approach of the presentation. I would highly recommend bringing this to any school as I saw immense value in the interactive gallery," said Scott Martens, SDSS teacher.
"The process to request the presentation was simple and the WorkBC crew took care of everything but the scheduling of the classes that would attend. We were using the gym so I decided that having PHE 8/9/10 classes attend was the least disruptive to classes. The amount of exposure towards our career programs was awesome and it got the students thinking about career paths that some may not have considered before. The use of technology was great but there were also some displays that were more hands on, so it felt like there was something for everyone. This initiative was of great value and I will bring it back to the school next year for sure."
The Find Your Fit program offers a hands-on approach to career exploration with activity stations representing a wide range of industries: Pilot, Flight Engineer, Automotive Technician, Social Worker, Early Childhood Educator, Electrician, Sonographer, Occupational Therapist, and Physiotherapist, Web Development, 2D/3D Design, Coding, and more.
After completing the hands-on activities, students were able to explore career overviews (duties, earnings, education) and labour market statistics (job openings, industry trends, and post-secondary training options).
