The Kenora Catholic District School Board (KCDSB) values its partnerships with Wauzhushk Onigum Nation and the Kenora Chiefs Advisory (KCA), which provide students with meaningful land-based learning experiences. These collaborations enhance the educational journey by connecting students with culture, community, and the land in unique and impactful ways.
KCDSB's partnership with Wauzhushk Onigum First Nation has spanned 18 years, beginning with the Northern Studies Program. This program focuses on experiential learning and community engagement, giving students hands-on opportunities to participate in cultural practices and traditional activities.
In recent years, KCDSB has also developed a partnership with KCA, centred on programming at Strecker's Farm. This newer collaboration introduces exciting opportunities for students, including activities such as the Fall Harvest, wellness programming, and earning credits through Specialized High Skills Major (SHSM) offerings. Strecker's Farm also provides students with the potential for summer employment and the chance to accumulate community service hours.
"Our partnerships with Wauzhushk Onigum and KCA allow our students to experience learning that is rooted in culture, community, and connection," said Shelly Tom, KCDSB First Nation, Métis and Inuit Education Coordinator. "These experiences foster excitement, curiosity, and a deeper understanding of Indigenous traditions, which we are so fortunate to offer."
Students and staff have expressed appreciation for the impact of these partnerships. Students enjoy activities like ice fishing and the Fall Harvest, while staff value the knowledge and skills shared by community members and First Nation organizations.
The 2024 school year has been filled with memorable highlights:
- Ice fishing excursions for Grades 4 and 5 students at Wauzhushk Onigum.
- KCA Youth Wellness Camp in June.
- Dog Sledding with Burton Penner.
- Orange Shirt Day Powwow activities on September 30.
- Fall Harvest events at Strecker's Farm in October.
- Discussions about FNMI Youth Council-led programming with KCA and the high school.
KCDSB is committed to fostering and expanding these partnerships, ensuring students continue to benefit from meaningful, hands-on learning experiences that celebrate culture and community.
