The Kids in the Know (KIK) program is now fully implemented across all Kenora Catholic District School Board (KCDSB) schools, offering vital personal safety and well-being lessons from Kindergarten to Grade 8. Designed by the Canadian Centre for Child Protection (CCCP), the program equips students with knowledge, language, and confidence to navigate challenging situations and stay safe in an increasingly digital world.
A Comprehensive Approach to Student Safety
The program ensures every classroom has access to its resources, with some activities extending to Grades 9-12. "Kids in the Know is an amazing learning opportunity for all children in our schools," said Kellee Spendlow, Student Well-Being Coach. "Each year, students build on foundational topics like boundaries, online safety, and healthy relationships with new, age-appropriate concepts. It's empowering to see them grow more confident in their ability to navigate challenges."
Making a Real Impact
Students respond enthusiastically to interactive activities, such as role-playing and puppet-based strategies, helping them practice communicating with trusted adults. The program also equips students to handle online safety issues and recognize potential dangers.
"One student told me the program gave them the courage and words to come forward about something that was bothering them," said Kellee Spendlow. "That's the real impact of Kids in the Know.
Collaborative Support
Teachers and staff actively support the program, incorporating follow-up activities to reinforce its lessons. KCDSB's partnership with CCCP ensures the program remains up to date and relevant. "We're fortunate to have such a strong partnership with CCCP," noted Kellee Spendlow. "Their resources address the issues that matter most to our students, like online safety."
Next Steps
The program's next steps include increasing parent engagement to address student concerns, such as fear of losing devices when reporting online issues. "By sharing this knowledge with parents, we can give them the tools to effectively support their children," explained Kellee Spendlow.
The Kids in the Know program remains a cornerstone of KCDSB's commitment to student safety and well-being, fostering resilience and empowerment from Kindergarten through Grade 12.
