Conseil scolaire catholique Franco-Nord (CSCFN) announces that its Director of Education will be retiring on September 26. After a 30-year career in French-language Catholic education, Mr. Serge Levac will be stepping down to begin a new phase in his life, that of retirement.
Having studied music at the Toronto Conservatory, followed by a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Education at Laurentian University, Mr. Levac began his teaching career at École secondaire Sainte-Famille in Mississauga in 1995. A native of the West Nipissing region, he returned to Northern Ontario to hold teaching positions at École secondaire catholique Algonquin in North Bay and École secondaire catholique Franco-Cité in Sturgeon Falls. He then held a teaching and principal's position at École élémentaire catholique Christ-Roi in River Valley, and he continued as principal at École élémentaire catholique Sainte-Marguerite-d'Youville in Verner and École élémentaire catholique Saint-Joseph in Sturgeon Falls. Subsequently, he held the position of Director responsible for improving student performance at Conseil scolaire catholique Franco-Nord and became Superintendent of Education in 2013. Mr. Levac assumed the position of Director of Education on October 1, 2021.
During his long and distinguished career at CSCFN, Mr. Levac was responsible for numerous systemic dossiers, demonstrating, among other things, a passion for Early Years education, Indigenous education, the Actualisation linguistique en français (ALF) program, religious education, and special education. He supervised various schools as well as the school board, ensuring their smooth operation and the delivery of quality French-language Catholic education. He has also served on various regional and provincial French-language education committees over the years. In fact, he assumed the role of Chair of Conseil ontarien des directions de l'éducation de langue française (CODELF) in 2023-2024. Involved in his community, Mr. Levac has participated in numerous extracurricular music projects, has been a choir director, and has been a member of the musical group Les gens du Nord for many years.
Mr. Levac is honoured and privileged to have held the role of Director of Education and Secretary-Treasurer for the past four years. There is no doubt that Mr. Serge Levac has always prioritized the development and well-being of students, staff, and the school community throughout his career. His passion for education, his forward-thinking leadership, his willingness to innovate and his commitment to the French Catholic community have been major assets for CSCFN.
"On behalf of the members of the political table, I would like to express my most sincere thanks to Mr. Serge Levac for his invaluable contribution to actualizing Conseil scolaire catholique Franco-Nord's mission and vision. His approach to governance, transparency and collaboration have surely benefited and enriched our school community. His passion for French-language Catholic education has always been very evident. We will miss him," says Ronald Demers, Chair of CSCFN.
The Franco-Nord family wishes to recognize and underline the humble and empathetic nature of its Director of Education, his tremendous ability to listen and his exemplary work with students, parents, and administrative and school staff. We thank him for his dedication to promoting French-language Catholic education and wish him a well-deserved retirement.
Conseil scolaire catholique Franco-Nord will begin a hiring process in the coming weeks to ensure a smooth transition by September 26, 2025, with the next person to assume the duties of Director of Education.
