The Vancouver Holocaust Education Centre is thrilled to share that we have received $467,307 in federal government funding over the next five years to support our ongoing mission of providing Holocaust education programming to students, educators and the general public in BC.
This grant is a wonderful endorsement of our decades-long commitment to Holocaust education in BC and original learning tools for students and educators alike. The VHEC has been Western Canada's leading Holocaust museum for more than 30 years, challenging Holocaust denial and distortion through innovative programming and community outreach.
The VHEC will use these new funds to produce three fully bilingual online learning programs on Holocaust remembrance and to support teachers and students across British Columbia. As part of this project, we will create educational archives, historical resources and a guide for learners of all ages and professional settings.
The funding is part of a larger commitment of $3.4 million in new federal funding to combat antisemitism, preserve Holocaust remembrance and educate against Holocaust denial and distortion in Canada and around the world. Prime Minster Justin Trudeau announced the funding during an International Holocaust Remembrance Day commemorative event to mark 80 years since the liberation of Auschwitz Birkenau German Nazi Concentration and Extermination Camp.
The timing of the announcement is particularly meaningful for the VHEC. As a teaching museum that stewards programs and collections initiated by Holocaust survivors, we honour and support those who survived and remember those who perished.
The VHEC extends its sincere thanks to the federal government for their commitment to supporting Holocaust education today and into the future.
