It is with deep sadness that the Renfrew County District School Board (RCDSB) announces the passing of Trustee Dave Dobson, a devoted educator, coach, and advocate for public education. Dave passed away this past weekend, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, humility, and unwavering commitment to student success.

Born and raised on a dairy farm near Cobden, Dave was a proud graduate of Opeongo High School before continuing his academic journey at Carleton University and the University of Toronto. Over his 28-year teaching career in Oshawa, he made a lasting impact both in the classroom and on the volleyball court. His passion for athletics earned him numerous accolades, including the prestigious 3M Award for Coaching Excellence in Canada, induction into the Durham College Hall of Fame for founding its volleyball program, and a nomination for the Governor General Award for Teaching Excellence.
Upon returning to the area, Dave remained deeply involved in his community. He continued to coach volleyball at Opeongo High School, volunteered extensively, and even served as a local bus driver, further exemplifying his dedication to supporting students in every possible way.
"Dave was a tireless advocate for school staff and students, always championing their success and well-being," says RCDSB Chairperson Leo Boland. "His leadership and unwavering support for public education made him a vital part of our community. He believed deeply in mentoring students and fostering leadership programs that would help them succeed in life."
Dave Dobson became a Trustee in November 2022. Throughout his time as a Trustee, Dave provided steadfast support to his fellow Trustees, Executive Council, and all RCDSB staff, always with the students' best interests at heart. His compassion, dedication, and genuine care for others will be profoundly missed.
In honour of Dave Dobson, all flags at RCDSB schools and administrative buildings will be flown at half-mast until further notice. Service arrangements will be posted on the Fraser-Morris & Heubner Funeral Home website later this week.
"Dave's legacy will live on in the lives of the students he inspired, the teams he coached, and the educational community he served with such passion and integrity," adds Director of Education Kristen Niemi. "Our thoughts are with all those who knew Dave during this difficult time."
