OTTAWA CATHOLIC SCHOOL BOARD
Shaping the Future of Skilled Trades: Employer Information Session at St. Paul High School

February 26, 2025

On Wednesday, February 19, 2025, the Ottawa Catholic School Board (OCSB) and the Elite Skilled Trades Academy (ESTA), in collaboration with Skills Council of Canada, hosted an Employer information session at St. Paul High School to promote the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) and Specialist High Skills Majors (SHSM) programs. The event brought together skilled trades employers, educators, and industry leaders to explore opportunities for collaboration and workforce development.

The Employer Information Session featured meaningful discussions on strengthening skilled trades pathways for students while addressing barriers and breaking down stigma. Industry partners, educators, and policymakers explored opportunities for mentorship, co-op placements, and apprenticeships, exchanging ideas on expanding training spaces to meet workforce demands. Conversations emphasized the importance of bridging the skills gap, removing stigma and fostering collaboration to ensure students are well-prepared for future careers. Employers also gained valuable insights into how they can support students through hands-on learning experiences, helping them transition smoothly into the skilled trades industry.

OYAP: A Pathway to the Trades

The Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) was a key focus of the session, highlighting the importance of early exposure to skilled trades. Through OYAP, students can explore trades in high school, gain hands-on experience, and start collecting apprenticeship hours.

Employers also learned about the Registered Training Agreement (RTA) process and the benefits of taking on young apprentices. Many industry partners expressed interest in providing co-op placements, sponsoring apprenticeships, SHSM opportunities, and enhancing training spaces to inspire the next generation of skilled workers.

Recognizing Industry Leaders

A special thank you to Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe, who attended the event and spoke to employers about the importance of supporting skilled trades education. He also took the time to thank students for their role in building a better future for our city.

Students took an active role in the event by providing a warm and welcoming tour of the St. Paul facilities, proudly showcasing the specialized learning environments where they develop hands-on skills. Industry partners had the opportunity to see firsthand how these spaces support students in building the knowledge and confidence needed for successful careers in the skilled trades, as well as how their contributions and support can help shape students' pathways.

Looking Ahead

The OCSB and ESTA continue to seek new industry partners to expand co-op opportunities, develop summer programs, and create interactive learning experiences for students. By working together, we can help students transition into meaningful careers in the skilled trades. Thank you to all the industry partners who joined us for this important conversation your support plays a vital role in shaping the future workforce. If you're an employer interested in making an impact, now is the time to get involved.
