ELK ISLAND PUBLIC SCHOOLS
EIPS Schools Take an ERAS Tour for the Divisionwide Week of Inspirational MAth

March 12, 2025

From March 10-14, students throughout Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) are learning about different eras of real-world math applications during the Division's annual Week of Inspirational Math (WIM).

Elk Island Public Schools students are learning about the real-world applications of mathematics during this year's Week of Inspirational Math from March 10-14.

"Students are exploring several eras of mathematics," says Sarah Budd, a numeracy consultant at EIPS. "This week is all about sparking curiosity and helping students see how math connects to their futures. Each day, students will engage in rich math tasks and warm-ups designed to deepen their understanding, along with a guest reader from a variety of careers who will share how they use math in their work. By hearing from professionals in different fields, students can make connections between what they're learning in school and the skills they'll use beyond the classroom."

On the Math Eras Tour, the style of activities will vary among different grade levels all promoting the idea becoming successful in math class is fun, engaging and achievable for everyone.

"We've added a new feature this year called Career Snapshots," adds Budd. "In these short video snapshots, individuals from a variety of careers share live action shots and how they use math within their job. Students can hear from a machinist, contractor, registered massage therapist, psychologist, dentist, veterinarian and more."

In addition to Career Snapshots, students can also view longer Career Interviews about the everyday application of math in an individual's world of work. Presenters represent the fields of aviation, communications, medicine, science, sports, technology and many others.

Tim McAllister a hockey coach in Nashville is honoured to have presented for WIM. "I truly enjoyed the experience! My highlight was being able to answer the students' excellent questions. It was very heartwarming seeing so many smiles and waves goodbye as I ended the call. Thank you to all your staff and teachers for the countless hours put in developing the next group of math majors and great leaders."

WIM is an annual event inspired by the work of Jo Boaler, a Stanford University professor and expert in math education. Boaler is a champion of the growth-mindset, an integral part of WIM. Rather than focusing on whether the answer is right or wrong, the growth-mindset promotes the idea the most important part of numeracy acquisition is the ability to learn from your mistakes, push forward and challenge yourself to reach greater heights as a learner.

The generous assistance of large corporations, local organizations and entrepreneurs throughout the Division is helping students make important connections between what they're studying and the impact it will have on their lives going forward.
