The Living in Harmony Awards are hosted by the City of Saskatoon, recognizing contributions to the elimination of racial discrimination in our communities. The awards are presented on March 21 - the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. SPS schools were very well-represented!
The winners from our schools are:
Newcomer Youth Engagement Program at Mount Royal and Nutana: The Ribbon Skirt and Shirt Project gives newcomer students the chance to meet with elders as they learn about Indigenous culture through hands-on activities. Students from around the world craft their own ribbon skirts and shirts, and spend time sharing about their own cultures.
Mount Royal Art Students / Mustang Creations: MRC hosted a residency with Plains Cree artist Azby Whitecalf. Azby led students in creating five new murals, a gallery wall, an arts website, and an arts show. These projects focused on themes of community, identity, and belonging.
Brownell School Students and Staff: Students took part in a week of learning leading up to the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. They each signed small rocks to symbolize their commitment to reconciliation, which became part of a display that reminds them of this promise each day when they enter the school.
Mylana Shekera, Chief Whitecap Student: Mylana was recognized for a drawing she created symbolizing different cultures living in harmony around the world.
Honourable Mentions:
Colette Borgonje students Samiksha, Annapa, and Mahiksha Reddy received an honourable mention for their drawing showing representatives of many countries among Saskatoon's skyline.
Mount Royal students Gabbi Taras and Skyla Jennings received an honourable mention for artistic skill and community leadership.
We are incredibly proud of all schools and students who submitted their work to the Living in Harmony Awards. Congratulations!
