From April 7-11, students and staff across Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) are celebrating Education Week and highlighting the importance of education in the community. Education Week is led each year by the Alberta Teachers' Association and Alberta School Councils' Association and celebrated by schools provincewide.
Westboro Elementary students and staff are exploring what they love about their school this Education Week 2025.
Westboro Elementary will recognize Education Week through fun activities to get students thinking about how important education is to them now and in the future. "It's amazing at my school and I love being here," says Lincoln Taylor, a student who has attended Westboro Elementary from kindergarten to Grade 6. "I get to see my friends every day and the teachers are really kind. I'm involved with the school safety patrol, choir and track team. I also help out in the classroom and act as a buddy for the little kids."
The school is hosting a dress-up day on Friday the theme: Where will education take you? Taylor has plans for when he attends junior and senior high. "I want to try art, photography and cooking. I started making food with my family when I was five years old. I think it's something I want to pursue after high school."
The school is also exploring novel ways to support students during the school year, from sprinkling in emotional regulation strategies throughout the week to the Westboro Friends Club. The club sees students hanging out with one another in the gymnasium, including students in the specialized system program Practical Learning and Community Education better known as PLACE.
"We're like a family here," says Tracey Prouse, an assistant principal at the school. "It's a great place to be, and a great place to learn. As an adult, I still learn something new every day. It's inspiring to see students get so involved with the school, like the 48 students in grades 5 and 6 who are part of the school patrol team. I'm proud to be part of this school community and to work with such wonderful students and staff."
Westboro Elementary and many EIPS schools will "chalk the walk" for public education, decorating the sidewalks surrounding their school buildings with chalk art to show their appreciation for staff. Other activities include daily announcements, buddy reading, community initiatives and more.
