May 9, 2025

Nearly 50 students from the Burnaby School District are being recognized with awards by the City of Burnaby for their contributions to community.

The 2025 recipients of the Youth Citizenship Award represent six of the District's eight high schools. The students were honoured during the first week of May as part of Burnaby Youth Week, which runs until May 9.

The award recognizes outstanding young citizens who make a difference in their communities by volunteering their time and skills.

The top five nominees also receive a $100 award. The following Grade 12 students earned top place:

  • Ava Devlin, Alpha Secondary
  • Julie Ma, Burnaby Mountain Secondary
  • Kylee Almendarez, Byrne Creek Community School
  • Suah Hong, Byrne Creek Community School
  • Zara Tanveer, Byrne Creek Community School

A full list of the more than 50 recipients can be seen here.

One of the recipients, Alex Collins - a Grade 9 student at Burnaby South Secondary, also designed the logo chosen to represent the 2025 Burnaby Youth Week.

Congratulations to all the recipients, who were honoured at a ceremony with Mayor of Burnaby Mike Hurley, Burnaby Board of Education Chair Kristin Schnider, and Superintendent Karim Hachlaf.
