As we wrap up Education Week, Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) continues to celebrate incredible student accomplishments based on their learning. Gurnoor, a Grade 10 WRDSB student, will be taking part in the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), representing Canada on the world stage. This marks Gurnoor's second time attending the competition.
Gurnoor was selected as one of eight Canadian students attending this competition. Chosen by Youth Science Canada Gurnoor will be presenting her invention, SynaptiQ. The invention aims to detect and treat hospital induced delirium.
"These students represent the best of Canadian youth STEM talent, combining scientific rigour with innovative thinking," Reni Barlow, executive director at Youth Science Canada said in a media release.
Speaking with hospital volunteers helped Gurnoor realize where she wanted to focus her research and how to bring her ideas to life. As part of the development of SynaptiQ, Gurnoor spoke with the University of Waterloo's engineering ideas clinic and Professor Saini from the Engineering Ideas Clinic at UW. It's an experiential learning center at the Faculty of Engineering with the goal of supporting students in developing skills to pursue their projects.Gurnoor's invention aims to help patients in hospitals everywhere feel comforted while keeping themselves, and others, safe. It has a multifactorial approach to detect delirium in hospital patients and provides an AI powered chatbot to provide comfort to patients.
"I am incredibly excited to go to ISEF," said Gurnoor. She shared that while this is her second time attending, she continues to learn a lot and is inspired by connecting with the top high school researchers from around the world.
