Since 2012, students, staff, and members of the Collingwood CI and Our Lady of the Bay CHS communities have supported the Canadian Cancer Society Relay For Life together through joint events and fundraising. Recently the schools were recognized for surpassing $500,000 in total funds raised.
This unique partnership began as a way for students from Collingwood CI to support a teacher at the school who had recently been diagnosed with cancer, with students and staff from Our Lady of the Bay CHS joining the effort. Participants raised over $55,000 at their first event. The schools have alternated hosting the Relay For Life five times since then, with the 2025 event being hosted at Our Lady of the Bay CHS. The last event, at Collingwood CI, involved over 900 registered students.
The Relay For Life is coordinated by a committee consisting of students and faculty advisors from both schools. Students develop leadership skills as they plan the day-long event, which includes a concert with student and staff groups performing or leading activities, volleyball, frisbee, and other games, in addition to the relay and survivor's lap. Sponsorships and donations are provided by local businesses and members of the Collingwood community.
The 2025 Relay For Life will be held at Our Lady of the Bay CHS on June 3 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Donations are currently being accepted online.
The Relay For Life is an annual fundraising event supporting the Canadian Cancer Society where teams take turns walking a designated path or track. Secondary schools throughout the Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) host and/or participate in the Relay For Life each year.
