HASTINGS AND PRINCE EDWARD DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD
Minds in Motion STEM Challenge 2025

May 23, 2025

Teams of Grade 7-8 students gathered at Loyalist College on Thursday, May 15, 2025 for the Minds in Motion STEM Challenge. Students competed in one of three challenges: Electric Vehicle Engineering, Hydraulic Removal System and Robotic Arm Design.

For Electric Vehicle Engineering, students were challenged to design a small battery vehicle that could safely transport supplies across a disaster zone as quickly and efficiently as possible. The Hydraulic Removal System challenge was to build a hydraulic lifting mechanism to move debris to a safety zone. Finally, the Robotic Arm Design challenge had students designing a robotic arm for the microbot servos that could remove debris out of the rescue path and into the safety zone.

Teams were given time to build and test in the morning, with competitions happening in the afternoon. Students were also given a tour of Loyalist College.

The event was a partnership with HPEDSB, Loyalist College and the Hastings Prince Edward Learning Foundation. It was made possible through the generosity of donors to the Hasting Prince Edward Learning Foundation's Science and Technology Fund.

Top Teams for each competition were:

  • Robotic Arm Design: Athol South-Marysburgh Public School
  • Electric Vehicle Engineering: Stirling Public School
  • Hydraulic Removal System: Tyendinaga Public School

Best Collaboration in each category:

  • Robotic Arm Design: Easthill Elementary School (Team 2)
  • Electric Vehicle Engineering: Prince Edward Collegiate Institute
  • Hydraulic Removal System: Madoc Township Public School
