OTTAWA CATHOLIC SCHOOL BOARD
Lights, Camera, Panther Minds! Building Pride, Creativity, and Connection at St. Michael School

May 23, 2025

At St. Michael Elementary School, young storytellers are making magic one photo, video, and podcast at a time. Panther Minds Media is a dynamic student-led club transforming everyday life into unforgettable memories. With the creative guidance of educational assistant Wilson Kalu (a recent Director of Education Commendation Award recipient), students are stepping behind the camera, mastering media tools, and using their voices to inspire, inform, and connect their school community like never before.

The club accomplishes much more than teaching students how to use a camera or a microphone it's about giving students a voice, a sense of pride, and a creative outlet that powerfully connects the school community.

"I wanted the kids to create memories they can hold onto," says Kalu. "I wanted them to be proud of what they've done throughout the school year."

Creativity That Opens Doors

Panther Minds Media isn't just a media club it's a living example of how the arts and technology can intersect to inspire critical thinking, innovation, and joy in learning. At the OCSB, the arts are a vital part of the curriculum, encouraging students to think deeply, reflect meaningfully, and express themselves creatively. Whether students are creating an Instagram Reel or writing a script for a podcast, they are engaged in the same reflective and interpretive process found in music, dance, visual arts, and drama. These creative experiences build confidence, cultivate a sense of accomplishment, and nurture essential skills that extend far beyond the classroom.

Empowering Students Through Expression

Since its official launch in September 2024, Panther Minds Media has been a hub for innovation and inspiration. Students have created everything from highlight reels of sporting events to heartfelt holiday videos and impactful PSAs. One standout project was the Ultimate Frisbee team highlight video featuring students from grades 5 and 6. Another memorable project was the school's Black History Month video a collaborative effort that earned second place in a Board-wide contest.

These projects do more than document events they give students an opportunity to express themselves, take initiative, and work together toward a shared goal. Whether they're planning interview questions or brainstorming podcast topics, students are engaged, empowered, and enthusiastic.

"We've seen students come up with their own ideas for new videos or ask to cover class events. Some have even started learning to edit videos, with dreams of launching their own YouTube channel!" says Kalu.

Creating Valuable Skills for Life

Through their involvement in Panther Minds Media, students gain valuable technical skills using real media tools cameras, tripods, microphones while also learning the importance of teamwork, storytelling, and leadership. The club fosters collaboration, strengthens peer relationships, and gives students a chance to take on role-model responsibilities in school.

For many students, these experiences build confidence, spark creativity, and offer a sense of belonging.

Connecting Community, One Frame at a Time

Though still in its first year, Panther Minds Media is already making waves within the school. From Culture Day' to school-wide BBQS, the club plays a key role in capturing and celebrating the heart of the St. Michael community. Printed photos are displayed throughout the school, and families are beginning to see their children's stories reflected in a new, exciting way.

With the passion of its leader and the energy of its young creators, there's little doubt that Panther Minds Media is on its way to becoming something truly special a space where students can explore, create, connect, and shine.
