HALTON DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD
Trustees of the HDSB select Harvest Oak Public School as name for new Oakville elementary school

June 10, 2025

At the June 3, 2025 Board meeting, Halton District School Board Trustees selected Harvest Oak Public School as the name for the new Oakville elementary school (previously referred to as Oakville NE #3 ps), located at 1235 Wheat Boom Drive in Oakville.

The name Harvest Oak reflects Oakville's agricultural history and the school's location on Wheat Boom Drive. "Harvest" recognizes the Town's 19th-century wheat production, which played a key role in its early economic development and growth, while "Oak" refers both to the strength and longevity of the oak tree and to the community of Oakville itself.

Oakville students, families and community members submitted suggestions for the name of the new school earlier this year. In total 1,096 names were submitted, with approximately 937 unique names received. A shortlist of names was developed by a committee that included parent/guardian, student and community representatives, Trustees and staff.

The school, which is currently under construction, is scheduled to open in September 2025 as a Sustainable Future School (SFS) and will accommodate more than 750 students from Kindergarten to Grade 8. The three-story accessible school will feature 21st century learning spaces with significant natural light, an open-concept library, a music room, a stage and gym. The school, located adjacent to a city park, also has five childcare rooms which will accommodate 88 students.

Quotes

"Trustees of the HDSB recognize the significance of naming a new school and the impact it will have to inspire students to strive for excellence," says Amy Collard, Chair of the Halton District School Board. "The selection of Harvest Oak as the name for this new school recognizes Oakville's rich agricultural history, heritage and community while symbolizing the growth, resilience and strength of an oak tree, an impactful representation of the local community and connection to the HDSB's Multi-Year Strategic Plan - particularly the commitments of Kindness, Connection and Community and Environmental and Global Citizenship."

HDSB 2024-2028 Multi-Year Strategic Plan

The 2024-2028 Multi-Year Strategic Plan sets direction and prioritizes the collective actions of all students, staff, families and community members. This plan ensures our efforts as an organization are aligned and coordinated to support more than 67,000 students, 11,000 staff and the broader HDSB community. The six commitments identified in this four-year plan intersect and overlap to ensure that we take a cohesive approach to fulfilling its objectives.
