It's not every day the City of Ottawa proclaims a day in someone's honour. But then again, there's only one Dr. Thomas D'Amico.
On June 16, 2025, Mayor Mark Sutcliffe officially proclaimed Dr. Thomas D'Amico Day in recognition of Tom's extraordinary 35-year career in Catholic education, most recently as Director of Education for the Ottawa Catholic School Board.
This honour is much bigger than a plaque or a headline. It's a moment to reflect on a legacy that has shaped the Ottawa Catholic School Board and Catholic education across Ontario and beyond.
"For decades, Tom has modelled what servant leadership truly looks like," said Mark Mullan, Chair of the Board of Trustees. "He leads with purpose, humility, and a deep belief in people. His impact will be felt for generations."
Long before we formalized our Spiritual Theme - Open Doors, Build Bridges, Nourish New Beginnings - Tom was living it.
He opened doors for students and staff who needed someone to believe in them. He built bridges between schools, across systems, and within our communities always with empathy and trust. And he helped nourish new beginnings, not by chasing the spotlight, but by making space for others to shine.
"Tom has always seen leadership as a way to serve," said Mary Donaghy, incoming Director of Education. "He was a champion of student voice. He supported staff to be innovative, and he helped our entire system move forward with kindness and compassion."
Under his guidance, our Strategic Commitments - to Be Community, Be Well, and Be Innovative - weren't slogans. They were actions. They showed up in the way Tom listened and led, and he never lost sight of who we were here for: students.
He is respected across the province, nationally, and internationally for his forward-thinking approach to education - but more than that, for his ability to stay grounded in faith, equity, and belonging.
The City of Ottawa proclaims June 16 as Dr. Thomas D'Amico Day, and the Ottawa Catholic School Board deeply appreciates this celebration.
