For many years, Joan Gravel has been a pillar of support for staff and students at École Barrhead Elementary School, consistently demonstrating unparalleled dedication and a profound love for her work.
Joan's commitment to her role is truly exceptional. She arrives early to welcome kindergarten students off the bus and ensures everything is ready for the day. She never leaves before confirming that cleanup is complete and offering assistance with tasks for the next day. Her willingness to go above and beyond is evident in her taking items home for repair - from toys to furniture and even coiling machines often enlisting her husband's help.
Joan's deep affection for the children and her colleagues shines through in every interaction. She can often be found attentively listening to children's stories while colouring, participating in their play, or bouncing alongside a nervous child on the playground. She possesses an extraordinary ability to instinctively know what each child needs in any given moment, whether it's encouragement, a firm word, a walk, a snack, a comforting lap, or a hug, always adapting to provide individualized support.
Beyond her work with students, Joan is an incredible asset to her colleagues. She helps new staff feel comfortable and confident, enthusiastically supports teacher ideas, and is an empathetic listener. It often seems she can anticipate needs, always a step ahead in getting things done.
Throughout her many years of service, Joan has continuously maintained an incredibly positive attitude. She never shies away from unpleasant tasks, whether it's cleaning up an accident, a sick child's mess, or a spilled drink - she handles every situation with grace and without complaint. She embraces all ideas from precariously hanging giant dinosaur skeletons to singing silly songs or creating elaborate obstacle courses in the gym, all in support of student learning.
