On June 24, the Durham District School Board proudly celebrated the official launch of the Latinx Hispanic Educators Alliance of Durham (LHEAD) - a dynamic new affinity network dedicated to uplifting, connecting, and celebrating Latinx/Hispanic educators, students, and families across the board - with a Fiesta!

LHEAD's Fiesta 2025 brought together an enthusiastic crowd of students, families, educators, and community members in a vibrant evening filled with culture, connection, and joy. The event marked not only the end of the school year but also the beginning of an important and empowering network within the DDSB.
Attendees were treated to the incredible sounds of live Latin music performed by a talented band, filling the air with rhythms that had the crowd dancing, cheering, and soaking in the atmosphere. Cultural food vendors served up a delicious variety of traditional Latinx cuisine from savoury empanadas and taquitos to sweet, crispy churros and ice cream that delighted the taste buds of all in attendance.
The energy soared even higher during interactive dance lessons, where participants of all ages learned traditional dances such as merengue, bachata, and salsa. Smiles, laughter, and community spirit filled the room as people came together to learn, share, and celebrate Latinx/Hispanic heritage.
LHEAD was formed as part of the DDSB's ongoing commitment to equity, inclusion, and community-building. The affinity network seeks to create safe, affirming spaces for Latinx/Hispanic staff, students, and families, fostering pride in culture and identity while supporting academic and professional success.
