As Yukon communities continue to grow, the Government of Yukon is investing in school infrastructure across the territory to ensure students have safe, modern and supportive learning environments now and into the future.
Outdoor learning spaces, similar to the model at Jack Hulland Elementary School, are being developed at Ross River School, Eliza Van Bibber School in Pelly Crossing, Golden Horn Elementary in Whitehorse and Christ the King Elementary in Whitehorse. These outdoor learning spaces encourage flexible, nature-based learning opportunities.
To support increased enrollment, two portable classrooms are being installed at F.H. Collins Secondary School in Whitehorse to provide additional space for students this fall.
The following schools are also receiving important structural upgrades and renovations:
- J.V. Clark School in Mayo is receiving a brand-new roof to improve building integrity and comfort;
- Beaver Creek School is undergoing a major structural upgrade, including reinforcement of the building's walls and foundation, along with a new septic system;
- Robert Service School in Dawson is having its roof repaired;
- Ross River School is entering Phase 2 of its structural upgrades, continuing work that began last summer. This includes further building stabilization and roof shingling; and
- Tantalus School in Carmacks is receiving new flooring in half of the building, completing a two-year upgrade project that began last summer.
Technology and system improvements are also underway at the following schools:
- Selkirk Elementary School in Whitehorse is receiving a new public address (PA) system to improve safety and school-wide communication; and
- Jack Hulland Elementary School is in the consultation phase for a planned lighting upgrade, ensuring improved energy efficiency and learning environments.
The government continues to work with school authorities, communities and education partners to assess future infrastructure needs, including the potential for additional portable classrooms where necessary.
