On Oct. 14, the Board of Trustees approved the 2026-27 Modular Classroom Program , requesting that the provincial government supply 64 new modular classrooms.
Modular classrooms are portable, self-contained units that can be added to existing schools to expand capacity. These classrooms would increase the capacity of 15 schools, mostly located in the northeast and southeast quadrants of the city. If all these units are approved by the government, this would create space for approximately 1,600 additional students. Any units approved in this year's request are expected to be constructed and installed for the 2027-28 school year.
Last school year, the CBE requested 64 new modular classrooms. The provincial government approved up to 21 of those requests in March and August of 2025, and those classrooms are expected to be in place by in time for the 2026-27 school year.
The process of adding modular classrooms is subject to provincial approvals and funding. Requests received from across the province are evaluated based on current and projected enrolment, utilization rates, and other criteria.
More information about current modular projects can be found on the Modular Classrooms page.
