The Lambton Kent District School Board is proud to recognize Superintendent Ben Hazzard for earning his Doctorate in Education from the University of Western Ontario an achievement rooted in a deep commitment to improving student learning.
A dedicated, life-long learner, Hazzard leads LKDSB's Elementary Program portfolio and focused his doctoral research on early literacy. His dissertation explored how building leader expertise across the district can directly improve student outcomes. That learning has already shaped real change within LKDSB schools informing the rollout of universal reading screening, phonics and phonemic awareness programs, and individualized tutoring supports.

"Improving student literacy can disrupt patterns of barriers and open doors for future opportunities," Hazzard shared. "This work is about making sure every child has the tools they need to thrive."
Balancing full-time leadership, volunteer commitments, and family life, Hazzard credits the home team - his wife and children, for their unwavering support throughout the process.
For Hazzard, lifelong learning is a personal value, and a professional responsibility. His continued studies have strengthened his ability to support educators and students alike, and he's already co-authoring another article to share insights with the broader education community.
"Strengthening my understanding and sharing it across LKDSB is part of my core belief," he said. "It's how I contribute meaningfully to our schools and our students."
Ben's doctoral journey began in spring 2022 and concluded in August 2025, with classmates from across Canada and around the world. His next aspiration? Possibly teaching in post-secondary education another way to extend his impact on future educators and, ultimately, the students they serve.
Congratulations, Superintendent Hazzard, and thank you for continuing to lead with purpose, humility, and a steadfast focus on student success.
