Students participating in St. Clair Catholic's elementary Summer Learning Program demonstrated improvement in math and number concepts over three weeks of focussed instruction.
Students were given a pre-learning assessment before the summer learning camp began, as well as a post-learning assessment at the end of the program. Of students who completed both assessments 76 percent demonstrated improvement, with 41 percent improving significantly.
Seventy-seven students participated in the program over three weeks from July 7th to the 25th.
Learning was focussed on math instruction, particularly the number and algebra strands of the curriculum. The program also included experiential learning, with presentations from the Dairy Farmers of Ontario, lacrosse and dance instructors, Chatham-Kent and Sarnia police and the Oil Museum of Canada, among others.
The elementary program was led by Jamie Majeski, Assistant Superintendent and Math Lead for St. Clair Catholic, with support from the curriculum team, special education and in-school childcare providers.
"These results show the importance of specialized and focussed instruction for some of our learners," says Lisa Demers, Director of Education. "Special thanks to Jamie and his awesome team of dedicated educators, who gave up part of their summer to share in this important work."
July 2025 marked the 12th year for the elementary summer learning program at St. Clair Catholic. At the secondary level, 393 students enrolled in 11 eLearning courses over four weeks. In addition, 43 students participated in three Travel for Credit courses offered in English and French Civics and Careers, with students travelling to Ottawa, Montreal and New York in July. Twenty-seven students enrolled in a Grade 12 English Travel for Credit course travelled to England. Sixty-four students participated in summer co-operative education programs at UCC and St. Patrick's Catholic High School.
"Again, I want to thank our school administrators, curriculum support staff and teachers, who give their time to offer these additional supports to our students," says Mrs. Demers. "Well done!"
