Building Connection and Community: Valleyview's Men's Shed

November 5, 2025

When Valleyview resident Bill Lanktree came across a Men's Shed in another community a place where men could connect, share skills, and support one another he knew it was something special. Inspired to bring that same spirit home, he set out to create a space just like it in Valleyview and with vision and help from other community members and businesses, the Valleyview Men's Shed became a reality.

Men's Sheds are spaces where men can gather in their community to develop new skills, work on projects, and socialize. But it's so much more than that. For many men, aging and retirement can lead to loneliness and a loss of purpose. Men's Sheds provide a space, reminiscent of a backyard workshop where men share stories and tinker with woodworking or electronics. It's about friendship, purpose, and well-being a place where conversation and creativity go hand in hand.

In Valleyview, the initiative has thrived thanks to Lanktree and community partners. Northern Gateway Public Schools donates the use of a workshop space at its Valleyview Maintenance site, while local businesses and community members contribute materials, tools, and funds to keep the Shed active and growing.

Each week, participants meet to work on woodworking and community projects from crafting flower planters for the Town of Valleyview to building soapbox cars for kids to race in the annual town derby. These projects not only give members a sense of accomplishment, but also give back to the community in meaningful ways.

The group has welcomed special guests, including former NHL goaltender Cory Hirsch, who shared personal stories and spoke about the importance of mental health and wellness.

"Finding a space is often the hardest part of starting a Men's Shed," says Lanktree. "We're incredibly grateful to NGPS for providing the shop it's made all the difference."

NGPS Superintendent Kevin Bird says partnerships like this reflect the very best of what can happen when schools and communities work together.

"When we collaborate with our communities, we create opportunities that extend far beyond our classrooms," says Bird. "The Valleyview Men's Shed is a wonderful example of that people coming together to support one another, share skills, and strengthen community connections. Everyone benefits."

The Shed is excited to potentially expand the program this year to include youth from Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation.

A wonderful example of vision, care, and collaboration in action - with positive impacts for the entire community!
