The Manitoba government is investing $100,000 to support construction of a safe, inclusive and vibrant outdoor playground at Bairdmore School, providing an additional accessible recreation space for children and families in Winnipeg's Richmond West neighbourhood, Municipal and Northern Relations Minister Glen Simard announced on November 28.
"This important funding is the result of tireless advocacy from members of the community who worked hand in hand with Jennifer Chen, member of the legislative assembly (MLA) for Fort Richmond, and other south Winnipeg MLAs to make this funding a reality," said Simard. "This new play structure represents another success story of how working with community partners benefits all Manitobans."
The previous play structure was more than 20 years old and beyond repair, with several areas of damage and missing parts. In fall 2023, parents approached Bairdmore School's Advisory Council (BAC) about the state of disrepair and began the initial planning and fundraising to replace the play structure.
"This is great news," said Emily Sprague, co-chair, BAC. "We are so grateful for the Manitoba government's support and investment in a new play structure at Bairdmore School. Outdoor recreation is essential to children's physical and mental health, and we are pleased to see this project move forward to provide safer play opportunities and increased accessibility for our students, and the surrounding community."
Features of the project include sensory panels that support exploration for students and community members with a variety of sensory needs, as well as a design that allows for wheelchair accessibility throughout the structure. Work on the new structure is expected to be completed in summer 2026, with a grand opening planned for the 2026-27 school year, the minister noted.
