WATERLOO REGION DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD
Honouring Indigenous Knowledge Through Lacrosse at Glencairn Public School

December 8, 2025

As part of our ongoing journey to deepen student and educator understanding of Indigenous peoples' worldviews, perspectives, and histories, Glencairn Public School hosted an Indigenous-led, land-based Lacrosse learning experience.

Led by Haudenosaunee instructors, this opportunity offered meaningful insight into the cultural significance of Lacrosse, an ancient game rooted in Indigenous traditions and known as "The Creator's Game."

"Lacrosse is an ancient game. It is part of our creation story," said Ray Hill, a coach with Spartan Lacrosse. "The Creator gave us the game as a diplomatic way to resolve conflicts."

The event provided an opportunity for students to learn directly from Indigenous community partners and connect personally with the teachings.

"Partnerships with Indigenous communities support reconciliation and cultural understanding from the starting point, nothing about us without us,'" said Crissa Hill, Superintendent of Student Achievement and Well-being. "When students learn directly from Indigenous partners, they see where knowledge comes from and build intercultural understanding, empathy, and respect."

"This is a thread of learning throughout our community," said Christina Elmslie, Principal at Glencairn Public School. "It's not a one-and-done event; it's integral to who we are as a school and to moving forward in reconciliation."

Students shared the impact the interactive learning opportunity had for them, and made it clear it will be a lasting one.

"This was a very exciting experience, something I'll remember for a lifetime," said one Grade 6 student.
