The Pembina Hills School Division Board of Trustees has approved the Annual Education Results Report (AERR) for the 2024-2025 school year, a key accountability document required by Alberta Education and an important way the division shares progress with students, families, staff, and the broader community.
The AERR demonstrates how the division collects, analyzes, and evaluates student and system performance data to assess progress toward the goals outlined in its Education Plan. By reviewing both provincial and locally developed measures, the report provides transparent, easy-to-understand information about how Pembina Hills is supporting student success and continuous improvement.
Measuring Progress Across Four Domains
The report examines results across four main assurance domains:
- Student Growth & Achievement
Including Provincial Achievement Tests (PATs), diploma exam results, high school completion rates, student learning and engagement, citizenship, and early years literacy and numeracy assessments. - Teaching & Leading
Focusing on education quality, professional learning, and staff supervision and evaluation. - Learning Supports
Highlighting welcoming, caring, respectful, and safe learning environments; access to supports and services; and First Nations, Métis, and Inuit student success. - Governance
Reporting on parental and stakeholder engagement, financial accountability, audited financial statements, and the division's overall accountability and assurance system.
Results from the 2024-2025 AERR show Pembina Hills students achieving intermediate to high levels in most areas, with particular strengths noted in citizenship and education quality.
Focus Areas and Key Initiatives
The report also identifies areas for continued focus and improvement. Literacy and numeracy in the early grades remain a priority, with the division implementing new screening tools such as the Assessment of Foundational Reading Skills (AFRS). In addition, a pilot of the Self-Regulated Strategy Development (SRSD) program in Grade 5 is underway to further strengthen writing instruction.
Significant progress is also highlighted in Indigenous education. During the reporting year, Pembina Hills hosted its first division-wide Land-based Learning Camp at Métis Crossing and signed a Métis Education Services Agreement with Rupertsland Institute, reinforcing the division's commitment to Truth and Reconciliation and meaningful partnerships.
While challenges remain - particularly in high school completion rates and achievement gaps for some student groups - the AERR outlines targeted strategies already in place, including enhanced credit recovery options and improved student tracking systems to better support learners.
Commitment to Transparency and Improvement
The Annual Education Results Report plays a vital role in ensuring accountability to the community while helping guide future planning and decision-making. Insights gained from the report inform adjustments to strategies, resource allocation, and supports across the division.
